Gwen Ifill Demonstrates The Best Revenge.
Don Imus is a jerk. A big mouthed jerk, a racist, and an idiot. I'm getting to the party late on this one, but Pandagon has the transcript of his offhand, casual, breezy, completely degrading and humiliating comment about the Rutgers women's basketball team. (Geez, I link to Pandagon a lot.)
Here's the silver lining to this storm-cloud of stupid entitlement. In 1993 Don Imus referred to Gwen Ifill, the PBS News Hour correspondent and host, as a "cleaning lady." The quote was “Isn’t The Times wonderful, it lets the cleaning lady cover the White House.” Ifill is black.
Ifill is also incredibly smart. Obviously she's smart in a book way, because she covers national politics for PBS, but this incident gave her a chance to demonstrate how smart she is when it comes to getting revenge on small, awful people. Here's her technique- ignore the hateful comment aimed at you, which would send any normal person into spasms of justified rage. Lie in wait. The small, awful person who attacked you will one day viciously attack someone else. And then you write this op-ed in the New York Times.
And you have won.
Hurray for Gwen Ifill!
